The passage suggest that acquired clay jars which was found in Iraq and contains a copper cylinder sorrounding an iron rod, can not be used as a battery. However, the professor casts doubt on these explanations by stating that they are not convincing and maybe not correct by the following reasons.
First, the article revers that we need more evidence like electricity conductors which is attached to the batteries. Thus, without having this metal wires, we can not say that they used them as a battery. On the contrary, the professor dispute this hypothesis by telling that local people found this vessels and maybe they did not have sufficient information about other parts of them and thrown away that metals.
In addition, the passage posits that the copper cylinders inside the jars look exactly like copper cylinders discovered in the ruins of Seleucia which people used this cylinders for holding scrolls. The professor refutes this explanation by stating that maybe the origins of this cylinder was from that usage and this can not prove that these cylinders werenot used as a batteries. Moreover, we have some other inventions that their origins are different with the invention and it takes a lot of time to find that or they adapt this apparatus for another usage too.
Finally, the reading article states that there is no evidence of using electricity at that time because there was no implementation for them in their lives. The professor disputes this hypothesis by stating that they used this batteris for producing shock when they touch it. By this usage they could benefited form having invisible power or magical power. Also, doctors used from this electriciy for curing people from pain at that time.
