TPO 27: integrated writing task
The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about the origin of the little ice age. The author of the reading proposes three possible causes of this period. However, the lecturer refutes all three hypotheses mentioned by the lecturer as they are not based on new information.
First of all, the lecturer mentions the disruption of the Gulf Stream disruption which may have been caused by melting the glaciers that sent a large amount of cold water into the Gulf Stream. The speaker, on the other hand, rejects this hypothesis by pointing out that the Gulf Stream affects Europe and North America, while the little ice age had occurred in the southern hemisphere in areas like South Africa and New Zealand. Hence the Gulf Stream would not be a potential cause of the little ice age.
Secondly, the author claims that volcanic eruptions during little ice age would be another potential cause. Volcanic eruption releases gases, dust, and dark clouds into the atmosphere which leads to blockage of the sunlight. In that era, this phenomenon might have led to a dramatic decrease in temperature. Conversely, the lecturer argues that volcanic eruptions should release enough dust in atmosphere to drastically reduce the temperature. If it was the cause of little ice age it would have produced noticeable visual effects like colorful sunsets or brown snow that routinely happened. However, these effects were not documented in that period.
Finally, the lecturer mentions that a decrease in human populations in that period of time had led to the development of forests that absorbed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and hence reduced the amount of greenhouse gas in it which led to a decrease in greenhouse effect which could keep the earth warm. The lecturer disproves this claim by explaining that there was not enough time that this phenomenon takes place as the human population rapidly recovered to its previous level and they had to cut down trees in order to have enough field for their crops. Hence, forests were not long enough to cause long term global cooling.
