TPO 29-Integrated writing
The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about Edmontosaurus which survived in the North Slope winter during cold winter. In the text, the author mentions that migration to more temperate zones to find food as a possible reason for their survival. The lecturer, on the other hand, challenges all the mentioned arguments and believes that none of them is convincing.
Firstly, the author states Edmontosaurus's diet to support migration hypothesis since plants, which were necessary for Edmontosaurs survival, could not grow in harsh climate. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there were a lot of dead plants for Edmontosaurus as food sources to eat in the dark and cold North Slope winter. Moreover, she further explains that the climate was very warmer than nowadays in the North Slope in the past, and plant had excellent chance to grow in summer by accessing to sun's energy.
Moreover, the author asserts that Edmontosaurus lived in herd which can be a strong support for their migration to other places. The speaker, in the contrary, points out that animals may live in herd to gain other advantages such as being protected by predators. Besides, she says that some animals, such as modern Rozevelt elk have been living in herd in forest in the United state, but they do not migrate to other locations.
Eventually, the reading passage holds the opinion that Edmontosaurus were capable of migrating long distances. On the other hand, the lecturer posits that all the Edmontosaurus were not adults to migrate long distances. Furthermore, juvenile were not able to have a long journey, and they would slow down all other members in Edmontosaurus herd. Thus, adults Edmontosaurus had not abandon their offspring in cold climate.
