TPO 31 - Integrated Writing Task
According to the passage, three reasons are provided by critics to be as opposed to the idea that Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur. In contrast, the lecturer proposes that these reasons, indeed, are not convincing as what she mentioned in the lecture.
First of all, the critical viewpoint that fine lines are thought to be formed after the animals' death since they are buried in volcanic ash where it would easily get decomposed into fibers is presented. Nevertheless, the professor rejects it because other animals which were also buried within the same area are not seen to react the same. Their skins buried in the same condition are well-preserved. In this case, these lines are made likely to be feathers and not fibers.
Second, it is thought to be true that this dinosaurs were not feathered since scientists cannot tell with the autonomy what these structures are as a result of the presence of frills on most of the dinosaurs. Notwithstanding, the professor opposes that the absence of Beta-keratin, solely contained by feathers, rules out the possibility of this theory. Owing to the presence of this protein in feathers while nothing related found in frills, these colorful lines are definitely feathers rather than frills.
Third, Sinosauropteryx is not regarded as a feathered dinosaur since the feathers are commonly discovered to serve to regulate the internal temperature as well as to help fly when color lines are mostly situated on tails and backbones. Whereas, the professor holds a contradictory view that lines can be utilized as different function. For instance, the peacock has feathers in its tail displayed to attract a mate. That is to say, lines on Sinosauropteryx may also serve as the function of attracting mates.
