The reading and the passage are both about the propose and meaning of the use of carved stone balls in Scotland. The author of the reading feels that there are three theories that might help to explain the use of this balls. The lecture challenges the claims made by the author. For her, these theories are faulty.
To begin with, the author says that this balls have being using as weapons for hunting and also fighting. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. The professor says that these balls during the neolithic periods showed signs of ware and if they were used as weapons they should had cracked by the surface of this carved stone balls were found without any damage.
Second, the author mentions that this object was used as a primitive system of weights and measures. In the article, the author also talks about that carved stone balls were used as standard weights to calculate quantities of food or any type of thing that needed to be measured. The professor, however, challenged this point of view by saying that it could not be used as a standard system of weight and measures because these balls were made using diverse kind of stones that have a different density. She also mentions that sandstones, grey stones were use as materials, and even if these balls had the same size, the weight was different.
Third, the author posits that the people who had important social status during the neolithic period might had used this object to mark their importance in society. In contrast, the lecture mentions that this idea is inconsistent because any kind of balls have been found inside the tumulus of people that had prestigious in society during the Neolithic period.
