TPO-34 - Integrated Writing Task A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see

Sea cows was a huge marine mammals which lived in the water around Being Islands. Sea cows became extinct in 1768. The author mentions three reasons that caused decline in population of the sea cows. But the lecturer thinks that there are some problems with the reasons that author mentioned and they don't know the exact reason that caused extinction of sea cows.
First, the author thinks that overhunting by native people caused extinction of sea cows. Because, sea cow is a great food source in harsh enviroments. But the lecturer mentions that sea cows was a massive creature and it could feed one village of Bering Island for a month. Hence, It is impossible that overhunting caused extinction of this mammal.
Second, the author thinks that some ecosystems disturbances may caused a decline in the main food source of sea cows. But the lecturer thinks that ecosystems disturbance would affect other animals like whales which there is no reports about decline of population in other mammals.
Finally, the author mentions European fur trade may cause extinction of sea cows. Because European fur traders had weapons that allowed them to kill huge animals. But the lecturer mentions that sea cow's extinction happened hundred of years before European arrived in Bering Island and other reasons may caused extinction of sea cows.
