The professor explains arguments opposing the points stated in the reading passage about the criticizes of using Turtle Excluder Device (TED) which may help turtles not to be harmed or killed by shrimp-fishing boats.
First, the professor argues that thousands of shrimp boats are exist in United State's marines and if they only trap only one turtle each, we will see that thousands of turtles will killed. Therefore, although average rate of turtles, which get trapped in nets, seem to be very low, in fact, it could cause significant decrease in population of turtles after a while in a massive scale. Furthermore, she stated that instead of focusing on individuals benefits, we should take care more on turtles' live.
Second, the reading passage mentioned that shortening the time period which boats are permitted to keep their net beneath of the water can be consider as an alternative solution in order to protect turtles' population. On the contrary, the professor argues against this claim, and stated that it would be good in theory not in real world setting. She believes that forcing boats and fishers to limit their work time is quite impossible and government are not able to control all of the shrimp-fishing boats. As she states, checking boats to assure that whether they are equipped to TED or not is easier than setting impractical rules.
Third and last, the reading passage asserts that TEDs don't work for bigger turtles, e.g. loggerhead and leatherback turtles, and those are not able to pass the escape path that is designed based on TEDs standards. In contrast, the professor disproves the idea due to the fact that TEDs' design allow fishers to easily modify the escape passage, suggesting that TEDs are more efficient than criticizers already knew.
