Based on the reading material, the author stated that there are 3 viable explanations for the massive extinction occurred at the end of the Triassic period. However, the professor finds this idea bereft of sufficient reasoning and cites some ideas to the contrary.
Initially, the author argued that near the end of the Triassic period, sea levels were fluctuating and the decline of sea levels was the reason of massive extinction owing to the fact it had a profound impact on food supply chains. However, the lecturer refuted this idea by stating that although scientists agree that sea levels were fluctuating at the end of the Triassic period, this changes had occurred gradually. If the declining of the sea levels was the cause of extinction, it must have been occurred abruptly, but it didn't. Therefore, the fluctuating of sea levels doesn't count as a reason for massive extinction.
Another point mentioned by the writer of the reading passage was that volcanoes eruptions had released a considerable amount sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere, which made the temperature to fall massive climate cooling. That being said, the professor repudiated this one to by clarifying that sulfur dioxide remains in the atmosphere only for a short time and then it combined with water from rain and comes back to the earth's surface again. If the volcanoes eruption were the cause of extinction, sulfur dioxide must have been remained in the atmosphere for the long time, which is not plausible based on the scientific facts.
The final point discussed by the author was that asteroid striking made a lot of dust that blocked the sun light for many months or even a few years, so most plants died and many animals species starved. Yet again, the professor criticized this idea. She said that the striking of asteroids couldn't be the reason of massive extinction owing to the fact that many craters that made from those collide, are for long time before the massive extinction at the end of the Triassic period. Hence, this reason has nothing to the massive extinction.
