TPO-44 - Integrated Writing Task In 1957 a European silver coin dating to the eleventh century was discovered at a Native American archaeological site in the state of Maine in the United States. Many people believed the coin had been originally brought to

The reading passage and the professor in the lecture both discuss the topic of coin. However, the speaker discords with the ideas in the reading passage. She thinks that the silver coin had been originally brought to North America by European explorers known as the Norse, offering several reasons to oppose the article.

The first reason is about distance. Although in the article it claims that the location where the coin was discovered is located very far from other sites documenting a Norse presence in North America, the speaker says that many of the things found in Native Americans are far from the location they from, too. And she also says that the native Americans may travel to North America and bring the coin back to Maine. Therefore, the professor believes that the coin was brought from North America to Maine by Native Americans.

Second, the professor refutes the article by mentioning the coins were brought back to Europe by the Norse. Although the article states that the Norse did not bring any silver coins with them to their North American settlements since no other coins have been found at the sites where they inhabited, the speaker says that they may take back all valuable things like silver coins when going back to Europe. Hence, the professor concludes that the silvers coins were brought back to Europe by the Norse.

The third reason is associated with the trade. While the article indicates that the Norse who traveled to North America would have understood that silver coins would be useless to them because native North Americans did not see silver coins as money, the speaker argues that native North Americans may like to collect unusual and unique things. They may trade with the Norse to acquire silver coins. Thus, the lecturer holds that silver coins were traded to native North Americans by the Norse.

Finally, the professor in the lecture disagrees with the reading passage. She believes that the silver coin discovered at Maine is genuine and was brought to North America by the Norse.
