Both the reading and the lecture discuss the possibility of an old fossil structure whether were build by bees or not. The reading says that there are many doubts and this structure was not created by bees and provide three claims namely, lacking fossils of real bees, no presence of flowering plant, and the difference in some details. On the contrary, the professor asserts that the aforementioned points are not convincing and refuses all these claims and provides three compelling reasons.
Firstly, the author points out that there are not any fossils of actual bees which have been found at that date. The professor, in contrast, avers that it is true that there are no actual fossils but the reality is that the bees did not preserve in the fossils because the bees lived on special trees that had resin which is a sticky fluid. Moreover, those tresses were very rare and were common on that date. Therefore, the fact that there were not any fossils of actual bees does not mean the bee does not exist.
Secondly, the reading passage claims that the flowers on which the bees feed were not available in that period. The lecturer, on the contrary, casts doubt on this point by saying that the bees fed on non-flowering plants which preceded flowering plants such as Fine and Pine trees. Furthermore, by arriving of flowering plant the new bees may have adapted to them and feed on them.
Finally, the reading contends that there are some differences in the fossils such as lacking spiral pattern in the nest. The speaker, by contrast, refutes this claim by asserting that even though there are some differences in the nest, by chemical analyze it reveals that this nest belongs to bees because the bees excrete some waterproof components on the nest, and the analysis turns out that this structure was used by the bees.
