The reading passage and the lecture both discuss pterosaurs and whether they were capable of powered flight or not and offer two opposing views on it. The author of the passage states that the pterosaurs were not powered flight animals. However, the lecture challenges what the passage proposes and refutes all the reasons.
First of all, the author of the reading highlights that the pterosaurs were cold-blooded animals and as a result, they were not able to produce sufficient energy for powered flight. Not having been convinced, the professor asserts that the pterosaurs' fossils had dense hair covering their body, something like fur. She proceeds to say that this thick layer of hair could help the pterosaurs to keep their internal body temperature high enough to help their metabolism to generate such a high energy required for powered flight.
Moreover, the passage contends that the pterosaurs were to heavy, basaed on the evidence from their fossils, to be capable of powered flight. On the contrary, the speaker asserts that based on the anatomy of the pterosaurs, even though they had large bones, they were not too heavy and their weight were low. Therefore, they were able of powered flight, despite their size.
Finally, the lecture does not approve the third reason stated by the author which is having too weak and small back legs to launch a high jump for powered flight. The professor propounds that the pterosaurs were different from birds and used their all four limbs to walk. Consequently, by using their all legs, they were able to jump high enough to perform powered flight. Thus, she contradicts the claims of the passage and proves that pterosaurs were able to do powered flight.
