In this set of materials the reading passage discusses that the humpback whales find their magration direction by stars and explain some reasons to support this claim. While, in the listening the professor casts doubts on what is presented in the text and believes that this idea nis at the first is fasinating but it is not convencing.
First of all, in the text it is clearly mentioned that humpback whales known as an intelligent animal so they can use stars for navigate during maigration. However, the professor claims that threre are some other animals that used stars for navigahtion. Thus, seen three is not association between cornitive ability and navigation using stars. For example, some birds navigate by stars but they are not very intelligent animals.
In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that just an external force can maintain humpback whales migrate in straight lines. He says that a magetic field in the brain of humpback whales is the reason that they can navigate and preserve their especial line. The magnetic field in the brain of humpback whales is sensitive to Earth magnitic field and they find their direction using this ability.
Finally, in the text it is stated that the spy-hopping behavior in the humpback whales shows that they do this behavior to watch the stars position. The professor subscribes that other animals like shoks have this spy-hopping behavior and they use from this behavior for find a prey and hunting and maybe the spy-hopping behavior in whales have the same function.
