The reading claims that humpback whales use stars to navigate and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor states that this is a fascinating theory but the reasons are unconvincing and refute them all.
The reading passage bring the idea that humpback whales are intelligent enough to use stars to navigate by. On contrary, the speaker refutes this point by saying that there is no connection between intelligence and using stars to navigate. He states that bird and dogs use this method but not because they are intelligence, in fact fact they born with this ability.
Furthermore, the article argues that humpback whales migrate in straight line and it’s not possible unless using some external objects like stars while, the lecturer says that humpback whales use earth magnetic field as external hint to migrate. According to the professor in whale’s brain, there is biomagnetic which is sensitive to earth magnetic.
Finally, the reading asserts that humpback whales have spy-hopping behavior and they use to looking at the stars to providing them with information to navigate by. In contrast, the speaker dismiss this issue by saying that this behavior has nothing to do with navigation. He states that another animal like shark do spy-hopping but they don’t migrate, They use it to hunt. Also he mention that during day there are no stars in sky to use it to navigation and this reason is pure speculation.
