Both the passage and the lucturer are discussing the humpback whales navigating system. The lucturer thinks that the idea of humpback wahles navigating by the stars is fascinating but the evidences provided by the passage does not seem to be ture.
First, he illustrates that there is no connection between intelligence and navigating by stars, in order to clear up this confusion he presents an example of ducks that have an average intelligence level but they navigate by stars just because they were born with this instinct.
Second, having a bio magnitute part in their brain, humpback whales can connect with the earths magnetic field for their orientations, so it will make much more sense if we think they use earths magnetic field for navigating than the stars.
Third, the spy-hopping has nothing to do with looking up to the stars, many other animals do the spy-hopping, for an instance, however sharks do not migrate, they use spy-hopping, actually they use it for hunting and they do not look up to the sky. So this theory could be considered pure speculation.
