tpo 49: whales navigation by stars

the passage is putting forward the fact that humpback whales use stars in order to navigate by. The speaker has provided several evidence that can support this fact. However, the professor believes that it's a fascinating theory, but, these evidences are not really convincing. There for, he refutes each of the evidences by providing some contrasting examples of another species.

First of all, the passage states that these whales are intelligent enough to use a complex abstract system of sensory stimuli, like night sky, to find their ways. However, the professor is of the opinion that there is no logical connection between intelligence and navigating by night sky. Take ducks for example, although these birds have an average degree of general cognitive ability, they do use stars to navigate by, which can readily reject this evidence validity.

Secondly, the author mentions this point that whales migrate in a straight line, which it means that they can maintain themselves in this straight line only by using external forces and objects, that this force is, obviously, the stars. In contrary, the speaker intrigues another external force, a biomagnified chemical in whales’ brain. As the professor defines, this chemical makes the whale sensitive to the magnetic field of the earth, as a result, they use it as a landmark for orientation.

Finally, the reading takes an unusual behavior of the whales as a piece of evidence in order to prove his claim. The author, suggests that whales sometimes float straight up for minutes, their heads above the water searching for stars. In contrast, the lecturer believes that this behavior that is called spy-hopping is not convincing enough. In order to support his claim, by providing an example of sharks that do so but they don’t migrate with the help of stars. In fact, he proposes that this strange behavior is due to searching for a prey rather that orienting by sky. Moreover, as the whales do so during day, this come to mind that this evidence is a pure speculation.
