Both the reading and the lecture states the feasibility of traveling to Mars by humankind. The passage mentions that it is impossible to make this trip by counting three reasons. On the contrary, the lecturer stands against those points by explaining her notions.
First, the passage suggests that although humankind could travel to the Moon, the trip to Mars is impossible because the length of the two travels is not the same. It takes a few days to go to the Moon. However, a round-trip to Mars at least takes two years. Therefore, providing sufficient supplies of food, oxygen, and water is a crucial factor to be concerned. While the cargo capacity of the spacecraft is limited, there is not enough room to carry those essentials. On the other hand, the professor refutes the idea, stating that by the use of a new technique, it is possible to break all the dams. hydroponic is a way of growing plants in water instead of soil, which means the less need to space. Moreover, astronauts can cultivate the plants in the spacecraft; consequently, the plants can absorb CO2 and release O2 instead. Also, they are capable of recycling wastewater which solves the problem of carrying extra water from the Earth station.
Second, the reading suggests that the mission to Mars causes astronauts to experience many months being at the zero-gravity condition that has destructive effects on their muscles and bone density. The lecturer refuses the reason, mentioning that many astronauts have traveled to the Earth orbits during these years, and they have learned many techniques to overcome the severe conditions of being in zero-gravity. They do regular exercises and take minerals like Calcium to take their health back.
Finally, The passage indicates that Sun exposure is dangerous to astronauts in the absence of the Earth's magnetic field. As constructing a shield would lead to overweight of the ship, the travel to Mars would be impossible. In contrast, the professor asserts that solar radiation is not always dangerous since the amount of it varies in time. Hence, astronauts can monitor the level of emissions, so that in case of emergency they can go to a small shielded area installed on the ship. As a result, there is no extra weight added to the spacecraft, and the mission would be possible.
