Essay topics:

TPO 52 Asteroid as colonization option

The reading passage and the listening section are both discussing about building the colonization in asteroids. The article proposes some reasonable statements, however, the speaker casts doubt with it and delve into some reasons and examples to refute it.

First of all, the article mentions that asteroids have low gravity, which can assist people to carry less materials and easier to take off and land on the surface. However, the speaker disagrees with this statement. The low gravity causes people have health problems. When people stay a while in the low gravity condition, these people will lose muscle and lower the bone density. As a result, the low gravity is not a compelling reason for people to dwell.

Secondly, the article indicates that asteroids contains considerable valuable elements which made the colonization seems profitable. Nonetheless, the speaker disapproves of this argument and says it is not a whole picture. Because the transportation and the supply cost may surplus the profit. Moreover, the price may not remain the same as the price when these rare elements before discovered.

Last but not least, the speaker refutes the idea provided by the article that the asteroids are simple to arrive. Some asteroids probably close to the Earth but asteroids' orbit are unusual. This means the distance from Earth to the place where the people colonized is different. As the result, it might be easy for people to reach the colonization but hard to return.
