The passage and the lecture discuss a box-shaped device that can solve the water problem for trees in arid areas by condensing vapors in the atmosphere. The reading presents three reasons why this idea isn’t practical. However, the professor in the lecture argues against all of these reasons by pointing out that none of them are convincing.
First, the reading claims that it would cost 25 US dollars for each tree that is an extremely high price. However, the lecturer refutes this claim and states we can use each device for about 20 trees. Thus, if you divide the cost of the device to the number of trees that it can save, you would understand that it is a reasonable price.
Second, the passage believes that motivating locale people to look after trees that cannot serve as a source of food for them is difficult. However, the professor disagrees with this opinion and believes that people can use this device to collect water for growing other plants that would provide them food. Moreover, by growing more trees they would have more sources of firewoods.
Third, the reading states that the device is not practical because the device’s ability to collect and conserve water is limited. However, the lecturer refutes this idea because he believes that this device can provide a condition for small trees to grow until their roots become long enough to reach the underground waters. Thus, in that stage, they can survive without the device. The professor presents an example about trees in the Sahara desert that surprisingly, 90 percentage of trees survived after 2 years of removing the device.
