Task 1
The reading and the lecture are both about the feasibility of the utilization of a device used to collect water in fighting against desertification. The author feels that this is not a good idea to stop the deterioration of the expansion of the desert. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. Her position is that this device is a useful gadget in protecting plants in a water-deficiency area.
According to the reading, the box-shaped device is not cost-effective because it cost 25 U.S. dollars each. Millions of dollars would be a high cost in a broad area. The argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the devices can be used at least twenty times once the original tree has collected enough water. Therefore, the cost of these goods would be reasonable in areas that suffer from desertification.
Secondly, the author suggests that installment and management are required and should be executed by local people. But, people there have worked for a long time because of terrible financial status. There would be little momentum to help take care of the items. The speaker, however, asserts that the water collected could be distributed to other plants to help local people to grow more food. Also, the branches can be served as firewood to protect the cultivated crops.
Finally, the author points out that there is limited utility for the water collected. In other words, only a small proportion of trees can receive the benefit that the devices provide. And trees may become too big for the devices in living a harsh environment. In contrast, the lecturer’s stance is that the planted trees’ roots will grow longer to reach more water. A example showed that there are even ninety percent of trees remained well after the devices are removed.
