Both the reading and lecture are about the reduction of reading particular in literature-novels field. The reading provides some reasons that this decline will create some negative impression on the society. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. The professor finds all arguments unconvincing.
First of all, the author of reading declares that literature plays a crucial role in people's life. Literature can reinforce the imagination or empathize feeling among readers; furthermore, it is able to improve of our perceiving of language. This point is challenged by the lecturer. The professor points out other books such as history, science, politic and you name it, are being supported by people and they can also tender such a great benefit. As a matter a fact they help people to boost their brain's performance; consequently, the progress of understanding is not just restricted to literature novels.
Secondly, the article contends that nowadays people would rather watch television shows, listening music and so on; subsequently, this horrible circumstance can affect on the level of culture. This argument is rebutted by the professor. She believes that the culture has been changed and human beings can gain information about culture in plenty of other resource like an awesome music or a great movie. She elaborates on this by mentioning that these types of entertainments speak more directly than literature novels do.
Finally, the passage reading claims that since there is not enough reader, so publishers do not rely on talent young writers and this will caused literature stories to decline more and more. In the contrast the professor refutes this reason. She expresses that writers themselves are the main culprit of this calamity, because they employ the hard sentences which are difficult to be understood by people.
