The author expresses some reasons which indicate that Ethanol is not an appropriate replacement for gasoline. The lecturer, however, refutes the claim since he believes that the arguments are not persuasive.
First, the reading casts doubt on the influence of ethanol on global warming. It indicates that ethanol cannot be regarded as a solution for the global warming. Nevertheless, the professor thinks that other aspects of this issue should be considered. He means that, although the ethanol releases CO2 into the atmosphere like gasoline, its plant can absorb a large percentage of CO2 as well.
Second, using some plants like corn, which are utilized as sources of ethanol leads to a reduction in the food product, because many people cannot use these crops. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that the part of the plant which consume differs from the given portion that the ethanol is come from. Therefore, producing ethanol is not related to reducing the amount the number of plants accessible for food.
Third, the ethanol cannot compete with the gasoline in terms of price. In spite of the fact that the final price of ethanol is comparatively equal to gasoline, the government spends a high subsidy on ethanol. On the contrary, the professor thinks that this competition will be eliminated if people buy more ethanol due to the fact that an increase in purchasing a product results in decreasing its price. In other words, the more a product sells, the lower the price will reach.
