The reading passage argues the expressed information by ancient historians about Greeks weapon as burning mirror which used to persevere the port city of Syracuse from roman navy attack base on three reasons. however, the professor depicts his disagreement about mentioned points in the reading. First of all, the reading mentions to technological side of this weapon which there is no correspondence between the required technology to built this mirror with the level of Greeks’ technology. furthermore, burning mirror should be wide and contains parabolic curvature to absorb the sunlight to set fire that ancient world couldn’t support this technology. however, the professor explains to other side of this point. In his opinion, even small and flat piece of mirror can be effective to create fire. Thus, repudiation the use of mirror due to technological side seems senseless. As a second reason, the passage refers to required time by this mirror which took ten minutes in the thirteen meters. It means that this weapon was ineffectual to use in the fight to cease the enemy. The lecturer refers to ten minutes to kindle the wood while second minutes can be sufficient to set fire the other materials that Romans had used to build the boats and ships. So, fire could spread to other parts and woods even in the moving ships. furthermore, the passage explains other advance weapon that was ordinary on the Greeks. In fact, Greeks needed no other tools to set fire by using flaming arrow which had same function with burning mirror at the same distance. base on the professor’s idea, Greeks were familiar with flaming arrows and they were skillful about using that but burning mirror was a fascinating tools for them. Therefore, Greeks’ prefer was debated tool.
