The reading passage provides three theory for interpreting the applications of the curved stone balls which has been found in different locations of Scotland, However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some reasons to refute them all.
First, the author argues that these objects could have been used as weapon because they contain holes which could be used for swing them. Conversely, the lecturer casts doubt on this idea by stating that the surface of the weapons which have been used in that time was worn out, however, the surface of stone balls has preserved and no damage has been recorded on their surface. So, these objects could not use for this reason.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that the carved stone balls might be utilized as simple object for calculating the weight. In contrast, the lecturer highlights the fact that these objects have been made from different kinds of rock such as sand stone, so, they could not have been used for this purpose because different kind of stones have different density. As a result, although the dimensions of these objects were same, they had different weight and they did not used for the measurement purpose.
Finally, the reading argues that these objects could have indicated the social status of the people of that time. On the contrary, the professor dismisses this issue due to the fact that although some of these carved stones balls were had an elaborate design, lots of them was curved simply and they could not have been used for showing the social level of people on that time. Moreover, the speaker states that people on that time have been buried with their precious objects. But, none of these stone balls were found in the people`s tomb of that age. So, it is unlikely to say that these objects were utilized for illuminating people`s social level or status.
