The main topic of both the passage and the lecture is discussing the possibility of a permanent station for human beings to stay on Venus. According to the passage, the author claimed that it is impossible to stay on Venus continually since it has higher pressure than the Earth, no source of water and oxygen, and dim light, while the lecturer found this idea questionable and illustrated the citing at all, citing three reasons to oppose the points in the reading.
First, in the reading, the author claimed that since the pressure at the surface of Venus is all but 90 times higher than the Earth, landing on Venus would be indisputably impractical because landed objects would be crushed at the aforementioned pressure. The lecture, however, highlighted the fact that the station on Venus would not be fixed; rather it would be a floating one on the 50 kilometers above the surface of Venus. At this level, the pressure is equal the Earth; therefore, the pressure differences would not be a problem then.
Second, according to the author, the atmosphere of the planet is mainly consist of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid, and there is no source of water or oxygen; thus, transferring these vital compounds from Earth would be a solution which seems not practical and rejects the idea of building a stable station on Venus. The lecture, on the other hand, suggested that there are several compounds on the atmosphere there, and by this time, some chemical reaction have known, making the production of water and oxygen from the above mentioned materials feasible, as a result, there is not needed more to import them from the Earth.
The last point discussed in the passage has to do with the light on Venus inasmuch as it has thick clouds around, making the penetration of sunlight to the surface hard and only 60 percent of the light hit the surface. In addition, in order to produce power from solar energy, the lack of light could not be neglected, but the lecture argued that since the station would be at 50 kilometers above the surface of Venus, the light would be greater than the surface as there are fewer thick clouds and the light would be received at higher percentages there. Further, the equipment containing solar cells could be designed in the way that they could enjoy not only the direct light but its reflect as well.
All in all, the idea presented in the reading is untenable to three conspicuous reasons which were completely discussed above.
