Both the reading and the lecture discuss solutions to prevent birds from trying to fly through clear glass. The author of the passage provides three solutions; however, the professor in the listening challenges the arguments made by the author. He claims that none of these will effectively prevent birds from being injured.

First of all, the author suggests that by substituting traditional glass with one-way glass, people inside the building can see outside, but birds will not able to see inside. However, the speaker in the listening cast doubts on the idea by saying that one-way glass actually reflects the sight outside the building just like a mirror, such as reflecting the sky and trees. Since birds cannot differentiate between a mirror and reality, it cannot prevents birds from being injured.

Secondly, the reading passage claims that by adding colorful stripes onto glass, birds will tend not to fly through that area, and thus the lens is not harmful anymore. Nevertheless, the lecturer contends that if birds find there are holes between stripes, in fact, they will try to fly through the holes. Furthermore, to make this method effective, the gap between lines should be quite small. However, this will darken the light in the building, which indicates that this is not a good idea as well.

Last but not least, it is stated that since birds fly in the correct direction by sensing magnetic fields, so installing human-made magnetic fields can change the course of birds. Still, the speaker rebuts the idea by implying that while it is true that birds use magnetic fields to fly, the magnetic field is utilized only for long-distance travel. By contrast, when birds fly in a short distance, they only use their eyes and sense the light. Consequently, it has no effects on preventing birds from getting harm.
