The reading claims that the population of the yellow cedar tree, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, have been gradually decreasing for more than hundred years and it brings up three reasons to support it. However, the lecturer finds all ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
The author argues that one hypothesis is that insect parasites might be the reason. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that we still do not know what is killing the yellow cedar. He argues that, yellow cedar is much more resistance to beetles than other trees to die because this tree produces a poisonous chemical that protect it from beetles.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that brown bears might be the second reason. Brown bears claw at the cedars in order to eat the tree bark, which has a large amount of suger content. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that the number of yellow cedar declined all over that region which contains inland and island. As, no brown bear lives in the island, it is impossibe to be the reason because If it was, only trees in inland should be died and trees in island remained alive.
Finally, the reading asserts that the final hypothesis is graduate change in climate. The author adds that this climate temperature change can influence on root systems of the yellow cedar tree and undermine the health of the whole tree. In contrast, the speaker dismisses it due to the fact that this reason is not persuasive due to the fact that the numbers of trees died in the lowland is far more than the number of trees that died in the highland. Considering the fact that the temperature of highland is less than the lowland, if this reason was true, more trees should be dead in highland and higher elevations.
