In the lecture, the professor explains that the device turtle excluder device (TED) is effective and the cliticization reasons are not convincing. This casts doubt on the article, which states many people criticized TED for several reasons.
First, It is true catching a turtle on nets is rare, however, there are thousands of shrimpers boats on the southern coast of the United States, and accidentally they will catch thousands of turtles every year. This eventually will Impact the turtle population. Therefore, comparing the impact of TED on individual shrimpers should be based on the effect of thousands of shrimpers on the turtle population. This refutes the author, which claims that the cost of losing shrimp daily is too high in comparison with the small chance of saving one turtle.
Second, shortening the time limit for shrimp boat nets sounds effective, but the truth is a time limit is impossible to impose. Because there are thousands of shrimp boats on the sea each day and the government can’t control all of them. This contradicts the reading, which states that shortening the time limit that shrimp boats are allowed to keep their nets underwater will allow any turtles caught in the net to get air and also allow shrimpers to release the turtles from the nets.
Third, It is true TED is too small for some turtle species, but TED doesn’t need to be used in the area of large turtle species, and once larger TEDs are produced it will be effective to use in such areas. This rebuts the author, which claims that TEDs are not effective for larger species of endangered sea turtles.
In sum, all three reasons were contradicted by the professor in the lecture.
