The text and the lecture offer two opposing views on the accuracy of the hypothesis which illustrates the reasons of the Yellow Cedar decrement. While the text lists some factors such as insects, bears, and the weather, as the main reasons of this phenomenon, the professor counters these specific points and illustrates some evidences to call into question for the information in the reading passage.
First of all, the professor refutes the cedar bark beetles hypothesis which in the reading part candidates as a main cause of the tree's decline. The lecturer states that this tree is more resistant than other species. They saturated with a type of a chemical, which is toxic for the insects. If the cedar bark beetle starts to eat the Yellow Cedar's wood, it contaminates with this chemical and died anyway; so, it does not have a chance to overwhelm and attack the tree. That is how the lecturer casts doubt about this hypothesis accuracy.
Although the passage uses the surmise of the brown bear's claw and aggressive feeding habits as one of the reasons which lead to this event, the professor doubts the truth of this claim. As the lecturer states this phenomenon occurs in whole northwestern North America, both in the main land and the island, the island is free of the brown bear. So, it presents these decrements happen even in the land without the bear and this animal cannot be responsible for this matter.
Finally, the lecturer argues that this event occurs mostly in the low elevation with high temperature rather than in the higher locations with colder weather. Meanwhile, the passage presumes the climate change and its effect on the tree's vulnerable root system results in damages which mostly occurs on cold winter night , based on the professor's evidences this incident mostly takes place in the warmer location; as a result, the cold weather and the gradual change of the climate cannot be accountable for this fact.
