TPO 8 - Integrated task
Both the article and the lecture discuss the Chevalier the Seingalt's memoir. On one hand, the article argues that the memoir is not a valuable historical source about the European society in the eighteenth century. On the other hand, the professor opposes by stating that the memoir cannot correct in every detail but it's still a reliable source.
First and foremost, the reading states that the Chevalier had to borrow a notable amount of money when he was living in Switzerland, which contradicts the claim of the Chevalier that he was very wealthy. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that borrowing somebody's money doesn't mean the Chevalier was destitute of money. She informs that by the time the Chevalier arrived at Switzerland, he had to wait for days for his money to arrive. As a result, he had no choice but to borrow a Swiss merchant's money.
In addition, the article posits that the memoir could not possibly capture accurately the conversations between the Chevalier and Voltaire, a famous writer. Nonetheless, the professor casts doubt on this point by emphasizing that the Chevalier wrote down everything that he could remember of the conversations he had with Voltaire as a reference for composing his memoir. This was confirmed by the witnesses living with the Chevalier.
Last but not least, the author of the reading indicates that despite the statement of the Chevalier to have escaped from a notorious prison located in Venice, Italy, his jailers were bribed by the Chevalier's politically powerful friends to free him. In contrast, the professor rebuts this argument. She argues that there were other prisoners, who had more potent friends than the Chevalier had, but none of them managed to break out of the prison. Moreover, the ceiling of the Chevalier room was documented to have been repaired after he was free. According to the professor, this was clearly the evident of the Chevalier's escape from the prison.
