A study conducted at nearby Oceania University showed that faculty retention is higher when professors are offered free tuition at the university for their own college-aged children. Therefore, Seatown should institute a free-tuition policy for its professors for the purpose of enhancing morale among the faculty and luring new professors.
The letter from the faculty committee to the president of Seatown University, points out that free-tution for its professors should be instituted in order to enhance the morale among the professor and also to allure new professors to join. To support the point, they have given the arguement that the Study at Oceania University showed their is a direct proptional relationship exist between the free tution offer to its professors and their retention. Though from a abstract point of view the arguement seems to be legitimate, but a close analysis faind out that the arguement is flawed owing to the absence of some very important evidences.
First of all, the arguement does not give any hint about the sample base of the study. For example what is the total number of professors participated in the study; what is their age group; how many among them has actually college going children and how many actually prefer to avail the offer of free tutionship for their children at their own university. Also it does not mention anything abot the sample university the study has covered. It might be the case that the sample space if skewed and biased.
Secondly, the arguement must evaluate if any other measures can be incorporated in order to boost the faculties morale. For example, can the professors be provided some better monetary benefits instead of free tutionship, or any other perks which can compensate for the dissatisfaction among the professor if any present.
One of the larger lacunae in the arguement is that, it does not provide any solid qunatifiable figures like what is the average increase in number of years of the professors affiliation to university; if the professors leaving the university just after completely avialing the free tuionship for all of his children. The arguement, must discuss these numbers in order to evaluate the proposition.
Lastly the argument must put forward suggestion fot the proper execution of the propostion if at all it gets implemented. It must look at the angle where this benefit can be abused by some of the professors, how that can be prevented.
Providng evidences and explanation to all of the above questions, can be really helpful to evaluate the arguement in a more holistic manner. All the evidences must be examined from all the angles so as not to miss any important case which may weaken the proposition.
