The reading discussed three reasons which could possibly created the strange sound that Russian submarines detected in the years between 1960 and 1980. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some points to refute them all.
First, the author argues that these sounds could have been created by orca whales that lived in that area. Conversely, the lecturer casts doubt on this idea by stating that this kind of whales mostly lives near the surface of the ocean and Russian submarines could not detect their noise because they mainly stated in the deep water. Moreover, she states that if the source of these sounds were the whales, submarines sonar system was able detect them. As a result, the might not produce these sounds.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the idea that Giant squids Might produce these noises. In the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that the Russian submarines first detected these sounds in 1960s and these kind of noises have been reported for 20 years. Eventually, these sounds have been stopped after that time, while the giant squids already live in that place. So, if these animals was the source of these sounds, why should the stopped creating them after 1980s.
Finally, the reading asserts that other countries` secret submarines could produce these noises. In contrast, the lecturer dismisses this issue by stating that the source of these sounds moved very fast and changed its direction quickly and other countries ware simply not able to build such a fast submarine. Besides, she claims that if the sources of these sounds were other countries` submarines, the Russian sailors should have detected the engines` noise of them. So, they were not be the source of these strange noises.
