The chart shows student expenditure over a three-year period in the United Kingdom
The charts represent the percentage of British students spending on eight different consumer goods and services from 1996 to 1999. Students are aged under 26 in higher education.
Overall, the proportion of students’ expenditure on accommodation, food, bills and household goods, course expenditure and children decreased over three years, whereas students spent more on entertainment, essential travel and others (non-essential consumer items and credit repayments).
The student’s expenditure on accommodation and food, bills and household goods decreased over three years. Over those three years, students spent on accommodation reduced its amount from 24% to 20% whereas the amount to pay for food, bills and household goods declined from 20% to 16%. Relatively, students spent small proportion of their money on course expenditures and children of 10% and 1% respectively in 1996 and by 1999 which amount dropped to 6% and 0%.
In contrast, more students tended to spend more onto entertainment, essential travel and others. A quarter of students’ expenditure had used for entertainment in 1996 and which rose to over 30% by 1999, while other expenditure grew from 11% to 16% from 1996 to 1999. Meanwhile, students spent the relatively small proportion for essential travel of 4% in 1996 and this increased to 6% in 1999.
