TPO-09 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading passage and the lecture both discuss a fascinating topic pertaining to the hydrogen-based fuel cell engine instead of the internal-combustion engine for the automobiles. The author of the passage presents three main advantages of the hydrogen-based engine. The lecturer casts serious doubt on the claims made in the article. She says that all these ideas are not beneficial.
First of all, the reading article posits that hydrogen-based engine does not rely on petroleum which is a finite resource. He claims that there are various sources from which hydrogen can be produced like from water or from natural gas. This point is challenged by the professor. She says that hydrogen can not be easily made by water or from the natural gas. furthermore, she acknowledges that pure hydrogen is a liquid state which must need very low temperature. Hence, high technology needs to produce the hydrogen.
Secondly, the author of the passage argues that hydrogen-based fuel cells reduce the pollution problems because the byproduct of this kind of engine is water, which is not harmful to the environment. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer. She says that the process of making pure hydrogen causes pollution. She elaborates on this by mentioning that hydrogen from natural gas contains a process of burning coal and oil, which causes the pollution. Therefore, she says that hydrogen engine cars may not pollute the environment but the generator for the cars causes the pollution.
Finally, the reading article discusses that hydrogen-based engines reduce the cost of money. The lecturer, on the other hand, mentions that the cost of making the hydrogen is very high. She puts forth to the idea that engine contains radium which is a rare element so the price is very high.
