The article states that lanting genetically modified trees brings about some advantages. The professor however questions these benefits, saying that a close examination reveals some problems and costs.
First, the passage claims that genetically modified trees can survive more than nature trees. The professor opposes this point by saying that modified trees are resistant to one particular situation only. She explains that a typical nature tree is genetically diverse, therefore for most environmental situations, there are a few individual trees that can resist them, making it possible for that type of tree to survive eventually. On the other hand, modified trees are genetically uniform, so if they face a challenge they are not designed to, they will be wiped out completely.
Second, the reading posits that planting modified trees can provide economic benefits for farmers. The professor contends with this point by saying that plainting them has hidden costs. She explains that farmers must pay charges to obtain modified seeds from producing companies. Also, it is not a one time charge, since they have to pay the companies every time they want to plant the trees.
Third, the author states that planting modified trees can prevent native and wild trees to be overly used for wood and timber demands. The professor refutes this point by saying that the modified trees can cause more damages to local trees, because they grow more aggresively than them. According to the professor, if modified trees are planted among nature trees, they will outcompete them in soil, water, etc., crowding them out eventually.
