Both the reading and lecture are about Great houses which have been discovered in Chaco Canyon in the New Mexico in the American Southwest. The reading provides three reasons for the purposes of using these massive stone buildings and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all arguments dubious.
Firstly, the author of reading declares that since these mentioned buildings are similar to the architecture of Apartment buildings at New Mexico which are used by ordinary people; consequently, Great houses were residential. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He points out that there is a similarity between outside of Great houses with the Apartment buildings, however, inside of Great houses is very different. He elaborates on this by mentioning that there were a few fireplaces- rather ten fireplaces- which could not support one -hundred people's needs.
Secondly, the article contends that there is a possibility that Great houses were employed for storing maze which was the main source of food in this area; in the contrast, the lecturer claims that even a maze did not found on the floor and also archaeologists could not obtain any trace of maze or a large container related to storing maze.
Finally, the reading passage states that a mound discovered near one of these Great houses with a large number of pots; hence, the reading offers that these buildings may have applied as a ceremonial center that native people were gathering and eating foods in these rituals . This argument is rebutted by the professor again. The lecturer expresses that this mound except pots included other materials particularly constructions materials like sand, stone and even tools; subsequently, this mound may have been just a trash and meanwhile, pots may have belonged to construction workers.
