In some countries it is illegal for companies to reject job applicants for their age. Is it positive or negative to the development?
Apparently, employers judge job candidates due to variety of criterions such as qualifications, special skills, age, etc. in the process of recruitment. However, some governments have levied acts to ban eliminating job claimants because of their ages. To my mind, those acts are open to debate, thus before stating my standby I will attempt to discuss them considering both their positive and negative sides.
To begin with, that kind of prohibitions might be accepted, guessing they may raise opportunities for people who are under-age to find relevant jobs. Another merit of this issue is that, the old also can stand a chance to be recruited to wished positions. But to my mind, both categories of applicants still will not get what they want, as the first group lacks experience and the second one does not have satisfactory technological skills.
When it comes to the negative effects of such law acts, a lot of points could be brought onto the focus of attention. First of all, defining determinative elements when building up their staff must be solely companies’ business and governments have no right to interfere it. I mean, companies may want younger or relatively older employees in accordance with their human resources policy. Secondly, age is one of the factors that help employers to have general idea about their applicants in terms of their experience, abilities and so on. To exemplify, when my company needed new top manager to head our department, they accepted only claimants who were over 35, since our administrative staff thought only a really experienced worker could clear the mess that previous 27 year old manager had caused. Last, but not least, if age was not an essential factor determining probability of achievement in certain posts, there wouldn’t be age limitations for the most vital governing positions such as presidents, deputies, ambassadors and so forth.
To sum it up, although above discussed acts might have some positive influences on development, such effects are almost undetectable in comparison with the negative ones. Therefore, in my opinion, countries passing such bills will regret it sooner or later.
