The reading passage claims that ethanol could be a suitable replacement made by plants for use of gasoline. But majorities of critics are inclined toward the opinion that this replacement would have different disadvantages. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author contends that use of ethanol could not be able to solve the problem and will add to the global warming. On the contrary, the lecturer brings the idea that this replacement will not increase the global warming owing to the fact that ethanol is made from plants like corn, which is the contrast to carbon dioxide release to the atmosphere. In fact, growing such plants will provide a great chance to remove pollution from the air.
Furthermore, the author holds the view that production of ethanol will diminish other available plants using for other fuel. In contrast, the professor underlines the fact that plants that are made for ethanol are able to produce cellulose that is the main component of a plant cell. As a matter of fact, ethanol could be produced from parts of the plant that are not eaten by other animals. So, in this way, a number of food resources will not decline for animals.
Finally, as set forth by the author if the government does not support ethanol's producers by tax, it will not be able to compete with gasoline on price. Conversely, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that ethanol could compete with gasoline in near future and help of government will not be needed as the use of ethanol increase. Indeed, the price of ethanol will go down as more of it become available.
