Both the reading and the lecture are talking about using ethanol as an alternative to gasoline in the united states. The reading states that the replacement of gasoline with ethanol has many problems. However, the lecture disagrees. It claims that ethanol is a good alternative to gasoline as a new kind of fuel.
The reading states that using ethanol as fuel will not solve the global warming problem. Using ethanol will increase the carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, thus help to trap heat into the atmosphere. But, the lecture disagrees. It claims that ethanol is made of plant such as corn. Using ethanol will counter the act of global warming, because plant remove carbon dioxide from atmosphere.
The reading states that production of significant amount of ethanol will reduce the amount of plant for uses other fuels. For example, some animals feed on corn. Using corn to produce ethanol , could decrease the amount of animals feed on corn. The lecture disagrees. It claims that ethanol could be produced by using cellulose. Substance not eaten by animals.
Third, the reading states that ethanol will not be able to compete with gasoline in the price. According to the passage ethanol producers are supported by tax subsidies, which is a government support. If the this support is taken from the ethanol producer the price of ethanol will increase. Yet, the lecture disagrees. It claims that the when the production of ethanol increase the price of ethanol will decrease. A study shows that that if the production of ethanol increase buy three times as it is now the price will decrease by 40 %.
