TPO-30 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading claims that there are a plenty of reasons that the story of burning mirror that was an ingenious weapon that defended the Greeks during the 2200 years age, is just a myth and Greeks of Syracuse never really built such a device. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
The author argues that the ancient Greeks not technologically advanced enough to make such a device. A mirror that used in this weapon would have to be several meters wide. The technology for producing a large mirror with such specifications did not exist in ancient world. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that it was not necessary to build up such a large mirror, they could use it by attaching a plenty of small mirror together. So there is no need to such advanced technology.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that burning mirror would have taken a long time to set the ships on fire. During this time, the object had to be unmoving. It is unlikely that the Roman ships stayed perfectly still for that time. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that experiment shows that it take 10 minutes that wooden object to fire, but Romans ship was covered by sticky substance call pitch, these substance set on fire on just seconds and it spreading wile moving. Such a weapon would have not been impractical that reading states.
Finally, the reading asserts that burning mirror seem like on a weapon that the Greeks already had, Flaming arrows. So, the Greeks had no reason to build a weapon like a burning mirror. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that although each of them was a common way of welting the ships in fire but, by flaming arrows was watched by Romans ships and they became aware of the possibility of shooting arrows, but in burning mirror the enemy see only a mirror and suddenly confront with a fire so it would be more surprising and much effective
