The table below gives information about the underground railway systems in six cities.
The table shows the date opened, the route length and the number of passengers per year of the railway systems in 6 cities.
Overall, it can be seen that the 3 cities with oldest railway systems (London, Paris and Tokyo) serve significantly more passengers than the other 3 cities.
London has the oldest railway system among the 6 cities, having opened in 1863, and possesses the longest railway route of 394 kilometres. This city, however, serves only 775 million passengers a year, ranked at the third place among the 6 cities. While Tokyo and Paris have significantly shorter railway routes, these cities serve a lot more passengers, at 1927 and 1191 million per year, respectively, being the highest and second highest figures in the table.
Out of other 3 cities, Washington DC has both the longest route and the highest number of passengers. The railway system in Los Angeles is the newest, having opened in 2001, almost 150 years later than that in London. While Kyoto’s system has existed for a longer time than Los Angeles’, the railway in Kyoto is only 11 kilometres long and only around 45 million people use it each year.
