TPO-17 - Integrated Writing Task
Both the reading and the lecture discuss the effect of human population and agriculture growth on declining the birds' population. According to the reading, the author points out that the growth of human population an agricultural activity bring about a decline in the number of birds in the United States. The author provides three competing reasons to support his/her point of view, namely increasing human population and settlements, increasing agricultural activity, increasing the use of chemical pesticides. On the contrary, the professor rejects all three reasons by arguing that this claim in unconvincing and also proposes three alternative reasons.
Firstly, the reading passage asserts that increases in human population and settlements result in disappearing the birds' habitats. The lecture, however, refutes this point by saying that urban development provides better and large habitat for birds. As an example, people complain that there are a lot of birds such as pigeon are in the street. Moreover, the urban development does not cause uniform decline and consequently many birds shrink and others grow.
Secondly, the article avers that as population increase the agricultural activities must increase to support the growing human population. this growth of agriculture brings about the destruction of birds' habitats. The professor, by contrast, casts doubt on this idea by saying that it is true that agriculture cause the destruction but it is not happened by the way that the article mentions. Moreover, there are lessen less land that every year use as an agricultural site that this result from producing the same crop. Furthermore, producing more agricultural product per area the need for using more areas decrease.
Finally, the author claims that by increasing the agriculture the use of chemical pesticide increases which have negative effects on birds. The speaker, on the contrary, asserts that it is true that the pesticide has been using for a product but it would not increase to future and provide to change to defend her view. Firstly, a new much poisonous pesticide is not harmful to birds and just have an effect on growing pest and secondly, the new generation crop would not attractive to pests so the using of pesticide will decrease. Therefore, pesticides will not harm birds in future.
