The graph below shows trends in US meat and poultry consumption
The line graph compares the change in the per capita consumption of beef, pork, broilers and turkey from 1955 to 2012.
It is clear that beef was by far the most popular meat over the 57-year period. However, a considerable rise can be seen in the consumption of broilers, which the figures eventually surpassing those for the beef.
Between 1955 and 1976, beef consumption rose from 60 to a peak of 90 pounds per person per year. During the same period, the consumption of broilers increased from 15 pounds to 30 pounds, while the figures for pork fluctuated between 40 and 50 pounds. The figures for turkey was by far the least popular meat.
By 2012, the consumption of beef of the average American plummeted to 50 pounds. By contrast, broilers consumption had doubled since 1970s, to approximately 50 pounds per capita. There was no significant changes in the trends for pork and turkey consumption over the period as a whole.
