The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. the second chart shows the greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.
The given two pie charts illustrate the types of energy use and amount of emissions relative to them in an Australian house.
According to the first chart, dominant portions of energy, respectively 42% and 30%, are being consumed for heating and water heating. The rest is divided between refrigeration, lighting, cooling and other appliances which all together account for less than 30% of total energy use. The least share belongs to cooling and is about 2%.
On the other hand, second chart presents that the relative contribution of heating to the GHG emissions is only about 15% and it is the water heating that emits the largest amount of pollution, approximately 32%. “Other appliances” with overall share of 28% stands in the second place on the list of polluting activities. Cooling is responsible for the 3% of exhausts. Refrigeration gives out greenhouse gases twice as much its energy use share which is about 14%. Lighting and cooling cumulatively emit 11%.
Overall, there is no clear and distinct correlation between energy use and emissions. However, it can be concluded that heating considering its high energy consumption has low emissions. Though water heating has the highest contribution to the GHG emissions in an Australian domicile.
