Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific solutions proposed in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecture both discuss solutions to reduce damage of glasses to wild birds. While the reading proposes three different ways to solve the issue, the professor casts doubts on the statements by claiming that these methods are not effective.
First of all, in contrast to the reading which states that one-way glass can be a possible solution because people inside can see through it while birds outside would consider it as a solid barrier and avoid it, the professor asserts that surface of one-way glass serves as a mirror and it is as bad as tranditional glass. The professor supports this point by the fact that birds do not undertstand what a mirror is, and if the reflection in the mirror is something like skies or trees, the birds would certainly fly into that.
Furthermore, another solution introduced in the reading is colorful designs on window glass with the example of painted stripes preventing the birds from runing into the glass while occupants being able to see through the openings. The lecture, however, proposes a contradicting idea that the openings are seen as holes in birds' eyes and they are likely to fly right into that. According to the professor, if the openings are small enough, birds would surely circumvent, but the room inside would become very dark.
Finally, the professor claims that an earth magnetic field is only used for navigation when birds travel long distance, which challenges the standpoint made by the author who believes that creating a manual magnetic field would be useful to guide wild brids away. Moreover, the professor uses examples of birds' travellings to illustrate this. When birds travel from cold places to warm places during winter, they would use a magnetic field to direct themselves. However, when travelling from one city to another, the distance is relative short. In this case, birds use eyes and brightness of light to navigate instead of using a magnetic field.
