Hail—pieces of ice that form and fall from clouds instead of snow or rain—has always been a problem for farmers in some areas of the United States. Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field. Over the last few decades, a met
The passage and the lecturer are discussing the efficiency of cloud seeding reducing hail in farmers’ crops.
First, the passage indicates that cloud seeding is an effective method to alleviate hail in agricultural areas because it turns hail into snow thanks to a chemical product. Thus, rain and snow coming from this hail create less damages on lands. However, the lecturer qualifies this theory highlighting the fact that this process is effective under laboratory conditions which does not match with real meteorological conditions causing drought due to a lack of water.
Moreover, the passage suggests that previous tests implementing cloud seeding were made in Asia to regulate rain in urban areas. These experiences led to an effective result. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument explaining the experience took place in urban area where air pollution is high and favorable to cloud seeding. Yet, these climatic conditions are not the same in United States which could decrease the effectiveness of cloud seeding in unpolluted areas.
Finally, the passage provides a successful example of hail monitoring thanks to cloud seeding reducing damages. Nonetheless, the lecturer challenges the passage saying the reduction of hail was also noticed in neighboring areas. Therefore, the decrease of hail is more likely due to natural climatic variations than cloud seeding effect.
As a conclusion, the lecturer shows three different reasons why the efficiency of cloud seeding can be discussed.
