the reasons why sea cows became extinct

Essay topics:

the reasons why sea cows became extinct

Both the reading and the lecture are discussing extinct marine mammals named Steller's sea cows. The reading suggests three reasons why these animals became extinct. However, the professor asserts that none of the reasons are valid and there are problems with each argument.
To begin with, The author claims that native people might have diminished the number of sea cows by overhunting them. However, the professor refutes this point by arguing that sea cows were massive creatures. They were up to 9 meters high and weighed up to 20 tons. As a result, one of these enormous animals could feed a whole Syberian tribe for a month. While Syberian tribes were not that much big, they did not need to hunt many of the sea cows. As a result, this could not be the main reason for the sea cows' extinction.
Furthermore, the reading passage states that because of ecosystems disturbances, Kelp, which was the main source of food for sea cows, diminished in number. Consequently, the number of sea cows declined. In contrast, this argument is challenged by the professor's position that if any severe disturbances had happened that time, not only the Kelpt but also other marine animals like whales would have faced population decline. But, there is no report of whale declines. Therefore, It is logical to assume that Kelpt's growing was fine and the cause of the sea cows' extinction was something else.
Finally, the last point of the reading suggests that since the European fur traders caught the last sea cow, it is reasonable to think that the European arrival to the island was the main cause of extinction. Nevertheless, the professor casts doubt on this reason by explaining that it seems that the sea cows had been extinct before the arrival of the European. Studies have shown that the population of the sea cows was at its largest amount 1000 years before the time that the European first entered the island. Thus, this could not be the main cause of the extinction and the main cause, whatever it is, it should be considered as the main reason.
