The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The second chart shows the greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.
The charts compare domestic energy consumption in Australia with greenhouse gas emissions released from the use.
Overall, while heating consumes the greatest energy to operate, the amount of greenhouse gas emitted by water heating is by far the highest.
As is illustrated in the first pie chart, a sizeable minority of energy, 42%, is used to heat, followed by water heating with 30% electricity used. Apart from that, other appliances consume up to 15% energy which was twofold higher than that used to operate refrigeration whereas cooling and lighting are responsible for the lowest energy use, accounting for 2% and 4% respectively.
With regard to greenhouse gas emissions, the use of water heating and other appliances release a considerable majority of gas, constituting at 32% and 28%, in turn. It was then followed by heating and refrigeration, they occupy with the equal percentage of gas released of roughly 14%. Finally, only 11% of greenhouse gas is made up by lighting and cooking.
