Summarize the main points in the lecture, and then explain how they cast doubt on the ideas in the reading passage.
Both the passage and the lecture are about the analysis of competition in the classrooms. The passage indicates that competition is highly beneficial concept for all of the students, and implementation of competitions in the classrooms is well suited activity. However, the lecturer does not agree with the statements which are in the passage, by challenging them one by one.
Firstly, the passage implies that competition motivates students, encouraging them to do their best. Conversely, the lecturer refutes this statement by saying that based on a research which has been conducted recently, the actual effects of the competitions are very negative. Moreover, competitions have a significant influence on the performance of students. These downsides are performance anxiety, fear, low confidence and etc.
Secondly, the passage states that one of the main advantages of competition is that it creates an environment in which students push each other to excel and thereby increase productivity. But the lecturer disagrees with this statement, by saying that based on the analysis, cooperative work is much more productive than individual work. And also, the lecturer indicates that the cooperative work, actually, increases the level of productivity, which is highly beneficial for students.
Thirdly, the passage says that competition is fun for students. However, the lecturer refutes this statement, by saying that in the past, it was fun for students to participate in competitions. But nowadays, the students are more dedicated to win those competitions, rather than having actual fun. Thus, the lecturer implies that students are looking for an outcome from competitions.
