In term of whether electronic medical records have more advantages over traditional paper-based records, the article and the lecture contradict each other. The author in the reading states several benefits of electronic databases record, however, the professor in the lecture rebut each reason which state by author and claims that these reasons are uncertain.
Firstly, the author claims that medical electronic records reduce costs by saving money on storing and transferring data. Although the paper records need huge storage space, the electronic data do not need any space. In contrast, the professor refutes this claims and asserts that electronic records do not decline costs genuinely because these kinds of data need back up records and other instruments to protect the records, therefore, electronic data records do not cut costs actually.
Secondly, the article asserts that electronic medical records decrease the chances of errors dramatically. on the contrary, the speaker cast doubt on this reason and contend that electronic records do not eliminate errors because many doctors still use of paper for examination and their opinion. Thus, their staffs transfer these data to the computer later consequently, employers possibly have some mistakes in transferring data.
Finally, the reading contends that electronic database help to search and research easily. The lecturer refutes this claims and professes that it is difficult to get access to these records yet because there are strict privacy laws in the united state about patients information. Hence, nobody can reach these records and these records do not help to search for any information. Moreover, there is a very strict complicated procedure to get permission to use this information.
