TPO extra 3, anting
Both the reading and lecture discuss anting. The author states that many birds approach to colonies of ants then picks ants and rub them on their feathers. The author believes that as ants defend themselves by a chemical substance, formic acid, birds end up with it on their feathers and presents three theories about the advantages of anting. However, the lecturer finds the author ideas flawed and provides some arguments to the contrary.
To begin with, it is the author's assumption that as birds lose their feathers in summer and anting usually happens in the same season, birds try to soothe their skin by formic acid which acts as a skin lotion for them. On the contrary, the lecturer claims that ants are more active in summer, hence, it is easier for birds to find them than the other times. He explains that anting and losing feather are just a coincidence.
Second, the author believes that birds may rub ants on their feathers to protect themselves against external parasites and formic acid serve as a chemical defense. Yet again, the lecturer casts doubt on this point and explains that studies show birds which engage anting do not show less sign of parasites on their bodies in comparison with the birds which do not engage in anting.
The final point of contention is food preparation. The author claims that birds may engage anting to get rid of the bitter taste of formic acid before eating ants. On the other hand, the lecturer asserts that birds even rub thing son their feathers which are not edible like cigarettes and soaps. Therefore, anting cannot be related to eating.
